Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - Ketamine Technician / Substance Use Disorder Support

Job Description & Responsibilities

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Envision Mind Care serves in a flexible role that may include responsibilities as a Ketamine Technician or as support staff in the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) program, or both. This position is designed to adapt to the specific needs of the clients, focusing on providing specialized care in mental health treatments and substance abuse interventions. Under the supervision and guidance of the Medical Director, and a Registered Nurse Therapist, the LPN is responsible for administering medications, managing and monitoring patients during treatment, responding to adverse events, and contributing to the treatment planning and execution. The role requires a combination of clinical skills, patient management, and a deep understanding of mental health and substance use disorders, ensuring that clients receive compassionate and effective care aligned with Envision Mind Care's standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Medication Administration (if assigned to this role):

    • Assist in the preparation and administration of medication under the guidance of the psychiatrist.

    • Monitor patients before, during, and after treatment sessions for any adverse reactions or complications.

    • Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records related to their treatment therapy.

    • Maintain accurate and comprehensive medication logs including those for controlled substances.

    • Educate patients and their families about the treatment process and expected outcomes.

    • Conduct in person or virtual orientation sessions educating the patient on their treatments.

  2. Substance Use Disorder Support (if assigned to this role):

    • Provide nursing care to patients in both inpatient and outpatient substance use disorder programs.

    • Administer medications as prescribed and monitor for efficacy and side effects.

    • Manage and distribute medication to clients as part of the substance use disorder program.

    • Conduct patient assessments, including physical and psychological evaluations, to aid in treatment planning.

    • Respond to and manage any adverse events or emergencies, ensuring patient safety and proper care.

    • Support detoxification processes and manage withdrawal symptoms under the supervision of medical staff.

    • Participate in the development and implementation of patient care plans in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.

  3. General Nursing Duties:

    • Perform routine nursing care such as wound care, blood draws, and other clinical tasks as required.

    • Advocate for patients' health and well-being within the treatment team.

    • Ensure all medical practices and treatments are in compliance with regulatory standards.

    • Participate in continuous education and training to stay updated on best practices in mental health and substance use disorder treatments.

  4. Professional Conduct:

    • Conduct oneself in a professional and ethical manner, maintaining appropriate boundaries and professional relationships with clients and colleagues.

Qualifications:

  • Valid LPN license in the province of practice.

  • Experience in mental health and substance use disorder treatments is highly preferred.

  • Certification or training in administering oral, intramuscular and/or IV medications.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of effectively working with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

  • Ability to manage time effectively and handle both emotional and physical stress.

  • All employees involved with the in-patient substance use disorder program, are required to complete training in critical incident management and the duty-to-notify process, ensuring readiness to effectively handle and report any critical situations that may arise in the facility.

  • Comfortable working with EMR and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Flexibility to work on weekends.

  • Ability to adapt to a continuously evolving workplace with innovative therapies.
